The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World – Семь чудес Древнего Мира
The Great Pyramid of Giza
The Great Pyramid of Giza (also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops) is the largest of the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex.
It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact.
The Colossus of Rhodes
The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of the Greek sun-god Helios, erected in the city of Rhodes, on the island of Rhodes, by Chares of Lindos.
The Lighthouse of Alexandria
The Lighthouse of Alexandria, sometimes called the Pharos of Alexandria, was a lighthouse built during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus.
It was constructed in the 3rd century BC on the island of Pharos. For many centuries it was one of the tallest man-made structures in the world.
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (Bodrum, Turkey), was a massive tomb built in the 4th century BC for Mausolus, the ruler of Caria.
Following a damaging earthquake, and with many elements cannibalised for the 15th century CE Bodrum Castle, the Mausoleum no longer survives.
The Temple of Artemis
Temple of Artemis was a Greek temple at Ephesus (present Turkey). The great temple was built by Croesus, king of Lydia, in the 6th century BC and was rebuilt after being burned by a madman named Herostratus in 356 BCE.
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
The statue was created by the Greek sculptor Phidias in the 5th century BC. It was placed in the huge Temple of Zeus at Olympia.
The statue, almost 12 m high and plated with gold and ivory, represented the god sitting on a throne ornamented with ebony, ivory, gold, and precious stones.
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
According to legend, the Hanging Gardens were built by the Neo-Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II (who ruled between 605 and 562 BC), for his Median wife Queen Amytis, because she missed the green hills and valleys of her homeland.
The construction of the Hanging Gardens has also been attributed to the legendary queen Semiramis, who supposedly ruled Babylon in the 9th century BC, and they have been called the Hanging Gardens of Semiramis as an alternate name.

The ability to delight in the amazing beauty of objects created by nature or by man, admire their uniqueness is inherent in all people. Perhaps that is why since ancient times, they have tried to create lists of so-called Wonders of the World. I read in a scientific encyclopedia that the first such attempt had already been made by a Greek historian Herodotus in the 5th century BC. He included in that list the island Samos, which in those days was the center of culture, as well as the one-kilometer water pipe-line Aqueduct and the Dike located on the island. Further, around the 3rd century BC, scientists created a classic list that included seven Wonders of the World. When I asked my parents what outstanding creations of architecture they could remember from this list, they, of course, immediately called the famous pyramid of Cheops, which became the only «Wonder of the World» preserved to our days. In addition, they mentioned about the Temple of Artemis of Ephesus, the Alexandria sea-light, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and other attractions. Since many of the classic World Wonders no longer exist today, in the 2001, the non-profit organization New Open World Corporation (NOWC) announced the decision to reveal the modern Wonders of the World. As a result, the list was expanded twice: it included seven existing man-made and seven natural sites. The man-made sites included such architectural structures, like the Great Wall of China, the Colosseum, the Taj Mahal and others. And the nature, according to NOWC created such unique items as Iguacu Falls, Halong Bay and the island Jeju. I would certainly like to see many Wonders of the World, and especially the pyramids of Giza, which are now also included in this list. I read a lot about them and admire the ancient Egyptians, who erected those grandiose buildings, not virtually having any construction equipment. I hope that someday I will be able to visit Cairo and go sightseeing on the Giza plateau.

New Open World Corporation (NOWC)

Is it simply a temple? How could it take its place among other unique structures such as the Pyramid, the Hanging Gardens, and the Colossus of Rhodes? For the people who actually visited it the answer was simple. It was not just a temple. It was the most beautiful structure on earth. It was built in honour of the Greek goddess of hunting, wild nature, and fertility. That was the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus.
It was situated in the ancient city of Ephesus about 50 km south of Izmir (Smyrna) in Turkey.
Although the foundation of the temple dates back to the seventh century BC, the structure was built around 550 BC. The great marble temple was decorated with bronze statues sculpted by the most skilled artists of their time.
The temple served as both a marketplace and a religious institution. Recent archeological excavations revealed gifts from pilgrims including statuettes of Artemis made of gold and ivory. earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. artifacts from as far as Persia and India.
On the night of 21 July 356 BC, a man named Herostratus burned the temple to ground in an attempt to immortalize his name, which he did indeed. Oddly enough, Alexander the Great was born the same night. The historian Plutarch later wrote that the goddess was «too busy taking care of the birth of Alexander to send help to her threatened temple». And when Alexander the Great conquered Asia Minor, he offered to rebuild the destroyed temple, but the Temple was not restored until after his death in 323 BC.
In AD 401 the Temple of Artemis was torn down by St John Chrysostom. Attempts were recently made to rebuilt the temple, but only a few columns have been re-erected.
The temple housed many works of art, including four ancient bronze statues of Amazons sculpted by the finest artists at the time. When St Paul visited the city, the temple was adorned with golden pillars and silver statuettes, and was decorated with paintings. There is no evidence that a statue of the goddess herself was placed at the centre of the sanctuary, but there is no reason not to believe so.

Seven wonders of the world
Diana, Apollo’s twin sister, was the goddess of the Moon. She was also the goddess of the chase and is pictured as a robust maiden in a hunting skirt with a bow and a quiver. The Temple of Diana at Ephesus was one of Seven Wonders of the World.
The pyramids of Egypt are built of huge blocks of limestone. The largest of three pyramids, the Great Pyramid, is believed to have been built for King Khufu (Cheops). The square base averages 230.4 m on a side. It rose to a height of 146.6 m. More than 2,500,000 blocks of granite and limestone were used in its construction, Its construction required the labour of 100,000 men for twenty years. It was built nearly five thousand years.
Babylon was one of the greatest cities of antiquity. The circumference of the city was forty miles, but the entire area was not covered with buildings. There were fields, orchards and gardens within the city limits. The whole city was enclosed by a great brick wall pierced by nearly one hundred gates, Outside the wall was a deep moat filled with water. Within tlie city there were-many magnificent buildings, including the great palace of the King, the Temple of the god Bel and the Hanging Gardens. The Hanging Gardens were built by the Great King to please his Median wife, who in her native, country was accustomed to mountain scenery. It was a square building of receding terraces supported by arches and columns. The terraces were covered with earth on which flowers, shrubs and trees grew.
Zeus or Jupiter (the Roman name) was represented as a man of gigantic size with curling hair and beard. Homer tells us that the movement of his eyebrows would shake Olympus to its base. The Greeks made many statues of this deity; the most celebrated was the colossal figure by Phidias at Olympia.
The other three Wonders of the World were a great Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, a great statue of Colossus at Rhodes and the Pharos or lighthouse at Alexandria. The Mausoleum was the tomb of King Mausolus (died in 353 BC), built by his widow. The Colossus of Rhodes was a bronze statue of the sun-god Apollo, over 100 feet high, erected in 292-280 BC.
The Pharos was a tower of white marble built 270 BC. Of all the Seven Wonders of the world only the pyramids have endured to modern times.

A “wonder” is something beautiful and exceptional that gives us a feeling of admiration and surprise. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World included magnificent buildings and structures built in ancient times. One of the most famous and beautiful constructions is the Temple of goddess Diana or Artemis at Ephesus, in modern Turkey. She was the goddess of hunting and Apollo’s twin sister. In mythology Diana is pictured as a maiden in a hunting skirt with a bow and a quiver. The Temple was built at about 550 BC but was later destroyed by cruel invaders. Another well-known ancient wonder is the Colossus at Rhodes, which is in modern Greece. It was a huge bronze statue of Apollo – the god of sun. This statue was erected between 292 and 280 BC. Its height was over 100 feet. It was destroyed in 224 BC because of a strong earthquake. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon became another ancient wonder. They were situated in Babylon, which is now in Iraq. These beautiful gardens were built by King Nebuchadnezzar to please his wife, who liked nice scenery. The approximate year of building is 600 BC. It was a square construction of receding terraces supported by arches and columns. The terraces perhaps rose up to 300 feet. The flowers, shrubs and even trees could grow them. Another interesting wonder was the Statue of Zeus or Jupiter. He was a man of gigantic size with curly hair and beard. The statue was built in the 5th century BC in Olympia, in modern Greece. It was a 40-feet-high colossal statue made of gold. The Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt also refers Seven Wonders. This pyramid was built in 2540 BC in honor of Cheops Pharaoh and is the only ancient wonder to survive today. It is situated outside of modern Cairo and is visited by millions of tourists. There was another wonder built in Egypt – the Pharos of Alexandria. It was a lighthouse built around the 3rd century BC on the island of Pharos. Its light was very useful at those times for ships. It was later destroyed by an earthquake. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus which was situated in modern Turkey was another ancient wonder. This was a tomb built by Queen Artemisia around the year 351 BC in honor of her beloved husband King Mausolus. The sight was destroyed by an earthquake in 1494. However, some of its remains can now be seen at the British Museum in London.
