WappenWiki Flags For Europa Universalis IV
WappenWiki Flags For Europa Universalis IV is a flag mod which replaces the flags of most of European Christendom as well as nearby Islamic polities with versions that are higher quality, higher resolution, more historically accurate, and which hold a consistent visual style.
Historical Accuracy
WappenWiki Flags endeavors to maintain historical accuracy, attempting to utilise heraldic devices which are generally accepted to have been in use on November 11, 1444 or as close to this date as possible. Note that once outside of Europe, historical accuracy is very difficuly to maintain due to a lack of historical documentation (or translations/digitisations thereof), and thus, out of necessity, it is not quite as stressed, although it will still be attempted.
Consistent Bases
WappenWiki Flags preferences the usage of coats of arms over the usage of flags, banners, or standards. It will only resort to the latter in case of the lack of the former. This means no jarring alternation between flags and coats of arms for arbitrary reasons. The mod also aims to maintain a consistent visual style. This means that colours will be homogeneous, artstyles between flags will be similar, and levels of shading and texturing will remain uniform. Overall, flags attempt to look as if they were created for the game, rather than looking like a mixed bag of items from various sources.
High Quality Standards
WappenWiki Flags only uses images which are of professional quality. No JPEG compression artifacts, random noise, inept artistry, or other such defects will be tolerated. Additionally, images provided are at a higher resolution than the base game (256×256 rather than 128×128). This does help eliminate some of the blur that the base flags suffer due to low resolution, but it still persists in some cases. I have tried increasing the resolution further, but it either did not help or, in some cases, resulted in making things worse.
Support for Both Banner and Shield Shapes
By default, WappenWiki Flags uses images which fit the base game’s shield shape. However, through the use of the «Banner Edits» addon, it also provides variant flags for those who utilise mods that change the default shape to a banner shape.
Ironman Compatible
WappenWiki Flags does not edit the checksum, as it only changes flags. This means that achievements can be earned while using this mod.

Can I use WappenWiki Flags with other flag mods?
As long as they do not replace the same flags, yes. If they do replace the same flags, then it depends upon which mod you wish to be overwriting the other. The order in which Europa Universalis IV loads mods without being given instructions is completely indecipherable to me. Thus, to ensure that the game displays the flags from the mod you prefer, you’ll need to do a little edit:
To have WappenWiki Flags overwrite another mod, open the WappenWiki Flags’ .mod file¹ found in your Users\Username\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV\mod\ folder. It’s just a text file with a fancy file extension, so if you get asked what program to use, just tell it to use Notepad or an equivalent text editor. At the end of the file, add this line:
Save the file, and now the other mod will be overwritten by WappenWiki Flags.
To have another mod overwrite WappenWiki Flags, open its corresponding .mod file and add this line instead:
Once again, save the file, and WappenWiki Flags will then be overwritten instead. Note that the .mod files will be reset whenever the mod creator releases an update, so you’ll need to redo the edit if that does occur.
¹As of EU4 version 1.29, the name of the .mod file is changed to a seemingly random string of numbers. You’ll just have to guess which file it is in the mod folder, as I don’t know what it gets renamed to or if it even is consistent. Alternatively, you can download the mirror of the mod linked below. The first line of the file will include the mod’s name.
Do you intend to continue adding flags to this mod?
I consider the mod to be more or less complete. My main source material, WappenWiki, only covers Christian Europe, as coats of arms are a tradition of Western civilisation, so any additional flags either require me to make them myself or require searching down and then editing to match the style of WappenWiki. Even then, it’s very difficult to find any flags of reputable source for Islamic dynasties. In fact, most of the ones I’ve provided are dubious at best. Thus, while the potential for an additional flag or two is there, there likely will not be any major expansions. Any updates that do occur will most likely be simple refinements.
Why is X country part of Y group in the preview images?
The preview images are sorted into groups for my own sanity in managing the mod. The groups are based upon EU4’s own geographical regions, with some changes. I mean no offence by their groupings and apologise for any caused.

If you don’t like one of the flags, just delete it out of the zip file. You’ll have to do that everytime the mod is updated.

Name=»EU4 Mododels» (названием ПАПКИ мода)
path=»mod/EU4 Mododels (путь к этой папке)
<
«flags»
>
picture=»good mod.jpg» а здесь фото вашего мода
Name=»Eu4 Mododels»
path=»mod/Eu4 Mododels»
tags=
<
«flags»
>
picture=»good mod.jpg»
Eu4 Mododels.mod

Europa Universalis IV
A guide on how to edit ANY flag for ANY country.
It’s more than likely other people have made guides before this one. However, upon messing around with the files on my own, this was the simplest way I could come up with as it requires the least amount of steps.
This will work in multiplayer whether both players have done this or not, however, if both players want to see the same custom flag, both players will have to go through this process.

*IMPORTANT*
If you make a mistake when moving the TGA files out of the game files and try to boot the game with one of the fliles missing, the game will not be able to load. If this happens, reinstalling the game should work, or checking for integrity.
Anyway,
In this guide, I’ll be using England as an example, so you can either follow along with me, or swap out England for another country. Just remember to do the same steps with the country you select.
First thing is to establish how the game recognises what flag to use for a country.
Go into your library and right click the game, select properties, go to local files, click browse local files.
You’re looking for a folder named ‘gfx’, inside look for a folder called ‘flags’.
Inside, you’ll find a whole bunch of TGA Images with names that are three letters long, that is how the game knows what image to use for each country as they are abbreviations of country names.
Now that we know where the images are located, we can set about making our own flag.
Open paint, yes, dumb I know, but it is perfectly suitable for what we need.
Set the size to 128×128 and start.
So long as you make something within the size limit, it will work.
REMEMBER. EU4 flags in game are in the shape of a shield, so don’t put any effort into the bottom corners, because they will NOT show up in the game.
Okay, once you’re done messing about and you have your flag ready, SAVE it in it’s current form in a spare folder where you will put ALL your PNG flags. (I called mine ‘My flags PNG’)
Create another folder where you will put all of the flags YOU made but in a TGA format (I’ll deal with that in a moment) (I called mine, ‘My flags TGA’)
UGH, nearly done, create yet another folder. This folder will be used for the games ORIGINAL flags.
(I called mine, ‘Original flags TGA’) (This step saves a ton of confusion later on)
Go back to the folder containing the games original flags. (Steam > Steamapps > common > Europa Universalis IV > gfx > flags)
Go back two folders (You should be in the Europa Universalis IV folder) and enter the history folder then enter countries. You should see Text documents with names that start with three letters, a dash, followed by the country name.
This folder makes this whole process soooo much easier.
Scroll through the countries (Or search for one) until you find the country you want to play as.
For this example, I’ll be using England. (ENG – England)
Once you’ve found the country, look at the first three letters, this will tell you which TGA file to change later, for me it was ‘ENG’. Write it down or remember it, your going to need this in a second.
Go back two folders (into Europa Universalis IV) then go into ‘gfx’ and then ‘flags’ just like before and find the three letters of the country. Again, for me it was ‘ENG’.
This TGA file is the image type used for England. Take the file and put it in the ‘Original flags TGA’ folder as you DO NOT WANT TO LOSE THIS.
Open your ‘My flags PNG’ folder and rename your flag to the game file you JUST removed, so I changed the name of my PNG flag to ‘ENG’.
Now you need to convert your PNG flag into a TGA, you can do that by using this website.
https://image.online-convert.com/convert-to-tga
Once you have your flag in a TGA format, you’ll need to put it in the ‘My flags TGA’ folder.
It should still be named with the three letters of the country you chose.
Now, move the TGA file of your flag into the ‘flags’ folder in the game. (Steam > Steamapps > common > Europa Universalis IV > gfx > flags)
AND you’re done!
Go into this folder (Steam > Steamapps > common > Europa Universalis IV > gfx > flags) and find your flag’s name and drag it back to ‘My flags TGA’ go into ‘Original flags TGA’ and drag the file back into (Steam > Steamapps > common > Europa Universalis IV > gfx > flags)
Make sure that when you remove your flag from the game, return it’s name to what it was when you created it as a PNG, otherwise you’ll forget which flag is which.
Any problems and you can just right click the game, properties, local files and click ‘Verify Integrity of game files’ this will check for any missing files. If you’re STILL having problems, uninstall the game then reinstall, or delete all the games files, then check integrity of game files.
One mistake that’s very easily made would be overwriting the original TGA files with the file of your custom flag, if this happens, delete your flag out of the game and check for integrity.
Thanks for reading, this is my first guide.
I don’t know whether or not this style of guide is acceptable, but I made communication with the reader the top priority.
Hope you found this useful or informative. Would enjoy some feedback.
(Let me know if you want more guides or have me unscramble existing guides that you find to confusing to follow)
