WASHINGTON, D.C. TEACHER’S PRESENTATION
Washington is the capital city of the United States It does not belong to a state, you know. It’s a city and district – the District of Columbia. Washington, D.C. is located on the east coast. It was chosen by George Washington as the permanent site for the nation’s capital in 1800. It was he, who named the land D.C. after Christopher Columbus. And this city was named after the first American President.
Washington D.C. is one of the only cities in the world that was designed before it was built. It is well planned. Washington is one of the most beautiful and unusual cities in the USA. It has little industry, and only one million people. One reason Washington looks different from other cities is that no building in the city may be more than 40 meters tall. There are no skyscrapers, because they would hide the city’s many monuments from view.
The heart of the city is the capitol George Washigton decided to put the Capitol building on a hill at one end of the city, and the president’s house on a hill at the other end. Nowadays the Capitol is the best starting point for sightseeing about the city. It is the tallest building in Washington, D.C., and the most famous building in the USA, because this is where laws are made and the Congress meets. The Capitol is surrounded by a beautiful garden with many trees and flowers.
In Washington, D.c . there are memorials to the most famous american presidents The Washington Monument was built in honor of George Washington. It is 555 feet tall and provides a panoramic view of Washington via elevator. It is called the “Pencil” because of its shape.
The Lincoln memorial is just opposite the washington monument It was built in honor of Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth President of the United States. Inside the Lincoln Memorial there is a huge statue of the former president.
The Jefferson Memorial is located at the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. It commemorates Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the USA. Inside is a 19-foot statue of Thomas Jefferson standing on a 6-foot pedestal. His writings from the Declaration of Independence are inscribed on the walls.
The white House is a symbol of the country Like most big old houses the White House has its story closely connected with the history of the American capital. It is the beautiful home of every President of the United States, except the first president, George Washington. This is the oldest public building in Washington, D.C., and has the most famous address in the country – 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. It consists of 132 rooms. The White House belongs to everyone in the USA. It is open for tours.
The national mall is the area between the capitol and the washington memorial Bikeways, footpaths , information kiosks are located there. One can easily find a park, a square or an open area in the city. The Smithsonial Institution, which consists of 9 the Smithsonial museums and the Information Centre, are located on the Mall. The museums contain many historical objects great works of art.

White House The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800.
Washington Monument The Washington Monument is an obelisk on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to commemorate George Washington, once commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and the first American president. Standing almost due east of the Reflecting Pool and the Lincoln Memorial, the monument, made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss, is both the world’s tallest stone structure and the world’s tallest obelisk, standing 554 feet 7 11⁄32 inches (169.046 m) tall. It is the tallest monumental column in the world if all are measured above their pedestrian entrances, but two are taller when measured above ground, although the latter are neither all stone nor true obelisks.
Lincoln Memorial The Lincoln Memorial is an American national monument built to honor the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It is located on the western end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., across from the Washington Monument. The architect was Henry Bacon; the designer of the primary statue – Abraham Lincoln, 1920 – was Daniel Chester French; the Lincoln statue was carved by the Piccirilli Brothers; and the painter of the interior murals was Jules Guerin. Dedicated in 1922, it is one of several monuments built to honor an American president. It has always been a major tourist attraction and since the 1930s has been a symbolic center focused on race relations.
Supreme Court Building The Supreme Court Building is the seat of the Supreme Court of the United States. Completed in 1935, it is situated in Washington, D.C. at 1 First Street, NE, on the block immediately east of the United States Capitol. The building is under the jurisdiction of the Architect of the Capitol. On May 4, 1987, the Supreme Court Building was designated a National Historic Landmark. It is one of a handful of National Historic Landmarks which are not listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
National Gallery of Art The National Gallery of Art, and its attached Sculpture Garden, is a national art museum in Washington, D.C., located on the National Mall, between 3rd and 9th Streets, at Constitution Avenue NW. Open to the public and free of charge, the museum was privately established in 1937 for the American people by a joint resolution of the United States Congress. Andrew W. Mellon donated a substantial art collection and funds for construction.
Vietnam Veterans Memorial The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a 3-acre (12,000 m²) national memorial in Washington, DC. It honors U.S. service members of the U.S. armed forces who fought in the Vietnam War, service members who died in service in Vietnam/South East Asia, and those service members who were unaccounted for (Missing In Action) during the War. Its construction and related issues have been the source of controversies, some of which have resulted in additions to the memorial complex. The memorial currently consists of three separate parts: the Three Soldiers statue, the Vietnam Women’s Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, which is the best-known part of the memorial.
The National Air and Space Museum The National Air and Space Museum (NASM) of the Smithsonian Institution holds the largest collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft in the world in 161,145 square feet (14,970.9 m2) of exhibition floor space. It was established in 1946, as the National Air Museum and opened its main building near L’Enfant Plaza in 1976.
