In this charming film based on the popular L. Frank Baum stories, Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado’s path and somehow end up in the land of Oz. Here she meets some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends their goals of a brain, heart and courage.

Introduction

Folklore, legends, myths and fairy tales have followed childhood through the ages, for every healthy youngster has a wholesome and instinctive love for stories fantastic, marvelous and manifestly unreal. The winged fairies of Grimm and Andersen have brought more happiness to childish hearts than all other human creations.

Yet the old time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as «historical» in the children’s library; for the time has come for a series of newer «wonder tales» in which the stereotyped genie, dwarf and fairy are eliminated, together with all the horrible and blood-curdling incidents devised by their authors to point a fearsome moral to each tale. Modern education includes morality; therefore the modern child seeks only entertainment in its wonder tales and gladly dispenses with all disagreeable incident.

Having this thought in mind, the story of «The Wonderful Wizard of Oz» was written solely to please children of today. It aspires to being a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartaches and nightmares are left out.

Он еще не знал, что именно это произведение принесет ему мировое признание, что спустя каких-то 40 лет на киноэкранах появится мюзикл «Волшебник страны Оз» и поклонники станут пересматривать фильм так же часто, как они перечитывают историю приключений маленькой девочки, оказавшейся благодаря разбушевавшейся природе в настоящей сказке.

Фильм «Волшебник страны Оз» снял Виктор Флеминг. Автомеханик и фотограф начал работу в кино ассистентом оператора в 1911 году. В Первую мировую Флеминг служил в разведке, в отделе фотосъемки. В 1919 году он вернулся в Голливуд и дебютировал в качестве режиссера. Особенно Флемингу удавались мужские приключенческие фильмы. И он снимал их до тех пор, пока не взялся за крайне сложный проект: Флеминг задумал снять цветной, что случалось крайне редко в то время, приключенческий мюзикл для семейного просмотра.

Премьера фильма «Волшебник страны Оз» состоялась в 1939 году. Зрителя сразу заворожила история девочки Дороти (Джуди Гарленд) и собачки Тото, которых ужасный смерч унес из родного Канзаса в сказочную страну Оз. Но приключения только начинались: дорогой из желтого кирпича им пришлось добираться к всемогущему волшебнику (Фрэнк Морган). Только он способен помочь Дороти и Тото вернуться домой. Попутчиками девочки в этом путешествии стали невероятные существа: Страшила, Железный Дровосек и Трусливый Лев. У каждого из них есть заветное желание, которое волшебник просто обязан исполнить. Но волшебники просто так волшебством не делятся, взамен они требуют выполнения сложных заданий.
Был ли в сказке политический подтекст, единого мнения нет. Считается, что это одна из литературных загадок ХХ века. Некоторые исследователи творчества Баума подчеркивают, что сам писатель не оставил никаких свидетельств о том, что использовал сказку как аллегорию политической жизни Америки. Другие уверены, что автор использовал подтекст как бы на подсознательном уровне. О существовании какого-либо политического «второго плана» впервые заговорили только через 60 лет после опубликования книги.

Флеминг оставил в фильме некий намек на сатиру: выразительные образы, отлично прописанные характеры, не оставляющие простора для маневра. А кульминацией можно считать разговор Оза с друзьями Дороти, во время которого вместо мозгов он выдает Страшиле диплом о высшем образовании, а Льву — медаль вместо смелости.

Впрочем, можно не вдаваться в нюансы, а просто наслаждаться бессмертной веселой, трогательной и поучительной сказкой. Наблюдать за обаятельными актерами и любоваться потрясающими костюмами, созданными Седриком Гиббонсом — дизайнером статуэтки «Оскар», получившим за свою жизнь 11 этих наград. На одну меньше, чем сам Уолт Дисней.

Свою долю «Оскаров» получил и «Волшебник страны Оз». В 1940 году фильм номинировался на премию в шести категориях и в двух вышел победителем: «За лучшую музыку» и «За лучшую оригинальную песню». Позже песня Over the Rainbow в исполнении Джуди Гарленд была признана лучшей песней ХХ века.

Остается лишь добавить, что британская газета The Independent присудила этой сказке первое место в «Топ-10 проклятых голливудских фильмов».
